This study began with creating a photocollage of this particular section of the Grand Canal in Venice. The idea was to show the progression of the canal space by folding out the building elevations, as in a film sequence.
These photos show the process starting from a pencil sketch based on the collage, to masking off the white areas, then working on the sky first, then water, then the buildings.
The challenge here was to illuminate the sky in an approaching sunset, while capturing both the buildings' and boat's reflections as well as the sky and light in the waves of the canal.
This was the first time painting with clear, flat brushstrokes, and painted rather consistently across the image -- except for the more detailed work.
